Magneto-optical properties of two-layer film systems based on Fe and Cr

2020

The results of the investigation of two-layer Fe/Cr systems using the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) are presented in this paper. The samples were obtained by thermal evaporation in a vacuum with a thickness of individual layers from 2 nm to 50 nm. It was found that the presence of the Cr layer significantly affects the values of the coercivity and the Kerr angle. At a substrate temperature of 450 K, the value of the coercivity is almost half that of the same sample obtained at room temperature of the substrate. In addition, the influence of the order of deposition of layers, as well as the effect of a thin gold protective layer on the parameters measured by the Kerr method, is shown. …

Photoionization cross sections of the 5S1/2 and 5P3/2 states of Rb in simultaneous magneto-optical trapping of Rb and Hg

2018

We report the measurement of the photoionization cross sections of the $5{S}_{1/2}$ and $5{P}_{3/2}$ states of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ in a two-species Hg and Rb magneto-optical trap (MOT) by the cooling laser for Hg. The photoionization cross sections of Rb in the $5{S}_{1/2}$ and $5{P}_{3/2}$ states at 253.7 nm are determined to be ${1}_{\ensuremath{-}1}^{+4.3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}20}\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}{\text{cm}}^{2}$ and $4.63(30)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}18}\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}{\text{cm}}^{2}$, respectively. To measure the $5{S}_{1/2}$ and $5{P}_{3/2}$ state fractions in the MOT we detected the photoionization rat…

Optical and magneto‐optical studies of Mn‐activated LiBaF 3

2005

The photoluminescence (PL) of Mn-doped LiBaF3 shows a weak Mn2+ emission band at 710 nm; the corresponding excitation bands are between 210 and 620 nm. After X-irradiation the PL spectrum shows two new bands peaking at 600 and 670 nm that are tentatively assigned to perturbed Mn2+ emissions; the intensity of all PL bands is increased. Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and the MCD-detected electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements show that F-type centres are formed after X-irradiation. The EPR measurements indicate that there is a spatial correlation between the F-type centre and the Mn2+ dopant. (© 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Concurrent magneto-optical imaging and magneto-transport readout of electrical switching of insulating antiferromagnetic thin films

2020

We demonstrate stable and reversible current induced switching of large-area ($> 100\;m^2$) antiferromagnetic domains in NiO/Pt by performing concurrent transport and magneto-optical imaging measurements in an adapted Kerr microscope. By correlating the magnetic images of the antiferromagnetic domain changes and magneto-transport signal response in these current-induced switching experiments, we disentangle magnetic and non-magnetic contributions to the transport signal. Our table-top approach establishes a robust procedure to subtract the non-magnetic contributions in the transport signal and extract the spin-Hall magnetoresistance response associated with the switching of the antifer…

Magneto-optical nanomaterials: a SPIO–phthalocyanine scaffold built step-by-step towards bimodal imaging

2013

A SPIO-phthalocyanine nanohybrid is developed as a bimodal contrast agent for Optical and Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The organic coating was covalently attached onto SPIO in a step-by-step approach. Each coated-SPIO was thoroughly characterized. The hydrodynamic size of the SPIO-Pc is ca. 60 nm with a coverage of ca. 690 Pc/SPIO.

Nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in rubidium vapor excited with blue light

2015

We present experimental and numerical studies of nonlinear magneto-optical rotation (NMOR) in rubidium vapor excited with resonant light tuned to the $5^2\!S_{1/2}\rightarrow 6^2\!P_{1/2}$ absorption line (421~nm). Contrary to the experiments performed to date on the strong $D_1$ or $D_2$ lines, in this case, the spontaneous decay of the excited state $6^2\!P_{1/2}$ may occur via multiple intermediate states, affecting the dynamics, magnitude and other characteristics of NMOR. Comparing the experimental results with the results of modelling based on Auzinsh et al., Phys. Rev. A 80, 1 (2009), we demonstrate that despite the complexity of the structure, NMOR can be adequately described with a…

Topological magneto-optical effects and their quantization in noncoplanar antiferromagnets

2018

Reflecting the fundamental interactions of polarized light with magnetic matter, magneto-optical effects are well known since more than a century. The emergence of these phenomena is commonly attributed to the interplay between exchange splitting and spin-orbit coupling in the electronic structure of magnets. Using theoretical arguments, we demonstrate that topological magneto-optical effects can arise in noncoplanar antiferromagnets due to the finite scalar spin chirality, without any reference to exchange splitting or spin-orbit coupling. We propose spectral integrals of certain magneto-optical quantities that uncover the unique topological nature of the discovered effect. We also find th…
